On 26th of June 1976 in South Africa, about 700 students were killed. The incident known as The *Soweto Massacre*, was due to the uprising by the students who were lamenting on the hostile nature of the then Government, apartheid regime. The mass death later gave rise to unity and strength from other students as well as other native South Africans.
In Kenya currently, the committee that was formed to review the education sector recommended an increase in the varsity fee.
The recommendation is that the fee be increased from the initial 16,000 to 52,000, this alongside other recommendations.
This is not an insurrection speech but a mirror of agony that is yet to befall students at the tertiary levels of their study either tomorrow or future. Just as the South African students who were on their way to get freedom and eventually gave light to others, the same force is now needed in the country.
The power of the students is worth recognition and not be disregarded. The raising of the varsity fee is uncalled for. This is the time students should stand up for that which is their right and freedom.
Raising of the fee means that about 60% of the university students who are financially unstable will be deprived of varsity education even after qualification, this is by the fact that some of these students depend on well wishers, sponsors and some depend directly on their parents who are also struggling to balance their earnings in a tough economic times
The Government should abort the recommendation in the said report and instead find a better strategy before giving a further thought on implementing the recommendation.
